weekly recap.

So far things are going pretty well with my half marathon training.  I've been able to get in most of my runs, and I've tried hard to stay disciplined, even when I didn't want to!

The week started with my gym kicking off its Biggest Loser competition.   They've done it several times before, but I've never participated until now.  I knew the element of competition is exactly what I needed to help jump start my fitness routine (again).

The BL shirts are really nice!  They are a dark heather gray with the above logo in a neon-ish orange.  I like how it fits as well!

  • Monday we were weighed in, had our body fat calculated, and took pictures.  I'm really excited about the whole thing!  That same day I took a Vixen Muscle class and ran 2 easy miles.

  • Tuesdays I have grad class all night, so those are always forced rest days.

  • Wednesday I took my Vixen Muscle class, and I completed my speed work for the week.

  • Thursday was supposed to be an easy run, but I ended up leaving school late and didn't make it happen.  This was the one missed run of my week.

  • Fridays are our date nights, so they are always scheduled rest days.  We had a healthy meal at Chipotle.

Saturday morning there was a Biggest Loser group workout scheduled for 10 am.  I knew I wanted to run before the workout because I had a busy day planned, so my intentions were to leave my house at 8 am to run some miles, and as part of my run, I'd end up at the gym.  I'm very fortunate to live only 2 miles from my gym, and I wanted to be smart about my time.  Including the trip to the gym in my miles made the most sense!

Unfortunately I got a late start to my morning, so I wasn't able to run the full 7 miles I was supposed to.  I ended up with 5 miles at a 12:03 pace.  I was supposed to hit a 12:58 pace, so I'm happy with a 12:03.  I wasn't trying to beat the pace that was provided by the plan, and I definitely walked when I needed to, but somehow I still ended up ahead of the prescribed time.  I made sure not to push it too hard, because I knew I'd be participating in the BL workout right after the run, and I wanted to have some gas left in my tank.  I don't feel too badly about missing out on the last 2 miles since I did go directly to another workout.  I plan to make that my Saturday routine for the 8 weeks BL is going on.

The picture below was taken during the BL group workout, and in the background you can see someone wearing the BL shirt I described earlier.  We were cheering on the final finishers.  Everyone was extremely encouraging and motivating toward one another even though it was a competition.  I can tell this is a great group of people, and I'm so glad I made the choice to join!  My partner and I won third place!  :)

These last two weeks of training have been humbling.  When I first looked at the plan created for me by Runner's World, I thought the paces that were planned would be easy - almost too easy.  What I've found is that I couldn't have been more wrong.  Far too often I've been sucking wind during a run that should be very doable, and I find that extremely frustrating.  I think a huge part of it is being on the treadmill.  Running feels at least a bajillion times harder for me on the treadmill.

Either way, whether I'm sucking wind or gliding like a gazelle (never), I will keep pushing and keep trying!

Good job so far. I think it is wonderful how you are juggling all your workouts: half training, Vixen, and BL. You are doing wonderfully!
